Epsom lost their unbeaten record in a high-tempo clash with league favourites Northampton at Woodcote Road.

The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead and their fast-moving team caused countless problems as Epsom struggled to step up from recent matches against less powerful sides.

A defensive reorganization and intense effort gave Epsom a presence in the game and they hauled their way back to 4-4 and were just 6-5 down at half time.

Northampton kept up the pressure throughout and continued to find the net and stay ahead. Epsom were missing three midfielders and the lack of athleticism was a telling factor.

Dave Gibson scored four on his debut and Epsom hit the post four times in the final quarter but they could not get back on level terms with a talented and strong side.

“We got caught cold in the first ten minutes and it was uphill from then. We came back very strongly but rushed things up front which invited more pressure onto the defense,” said captain Dan Funnell. “We are now acutely aware of the standard we must play at to get promotion.”

Epsom travel to Welwyn this Saturday for another tough fixture.
