Herne Hill Harriers extended their lead in the men’s Surrey Cross Country League after a second successive win at Denbies Vineyard in Dorking on Saturday.

The win puts the Harriers 46 points ahead of current league holders, Thames Hare and Hounds, after two out of four races.

Chris Busaileh spearheaded the 10-man team for the Harriers finishing in 5th place, with Alan Barnes in close pursuit in 6th place.

They were supported by Jonny Henderson in 10th place, Brian Wilder in 13th and Keith Newton in 14th. Close behind were Jeff Cunningham, Ben Paviour, Tim Elsey and David Taylor packing well for the Harriers in 19, 20, 21 and 22 place respectively. Sarwar Khan closed the team for the Harriers in 32nd place.

The Harriers’ under 15 and under 17 boys achieved a second successive win also, running as part of a combined team. Merhawi Yemane won the race outright, while U15 athlete Robert Hanson placed 3rd overall in the same race. Both youngsters were well supported by another U15 Amin Jisow in 5th and U17 John Tayleur, who was 14th in his combined age group and 19th overall.

The Harriers finished in second place in the U13 boys race with Paul Burgess running well to finish in 2nd place, while Max Ferrari and James Bates were 4th and 6th U13's respectively. The team was closed by Alfie Brown in 11th and Ollie Fox in 13th.

In the Surrey Women’s League races, the Harriers finished in 4th place place on the day and remain third in the league standings after two races. Cathy Ansell made a welcome return from injury to finish in 5th place overall, with Helen Hadjam in 22nd overall, Suzanne Swaine 36th in Div 1, Sam Whiting 44th and Katy Yarnell 52nd. In the younger races, the Harriers’ U15 girls placed 3rd team on the day, while the U13s finished 4th.

HHH athletes were also representing their countries at the British & Irish Masters International in Dublin, as Francis Marsh was part of the Northern Ireland silver medal winning M40 squad, Roger Alsop was in the England M45 squad that also claimed silver, while second claim member Mike Mann, who races for HHH on the track during the summer, was a member of the winning England M60 squad.
