Surbiton Ladies face a top of the table clash tomorrow (Saturday) hosting second placed Ipswich (push back 1.30 pm), as England Hockey League Conference East leaders, following their 5-2 win at Cambridge City, and Ipswich’s 2-1 home win over former leaders Chelmsford last Saturday.

Surbiton made hard work of their victory after taking the lead in the eighth minute courtesy of an Emma Rowland-Jones penalty corner conversion. Cambridge equalised in the fifteenth minute, Rachel Dann converting, unmarked at the right post.

Within two minutes, Surbiton were back in front, Clarissa Goodwin scoring her first goal for the club in a goalmouth scramble.

Helen Grant appeared to have put the visitors in control with a strike from the edge of the circle in the 27th minute, but four minutes before half time, Sophie Nehammer was allowed to pull a goal back, reducing Surbiton’s half time lead to 3-2.

Cambridge had chances to equalise in the second half, but towards the end of the game, Surbiton forced five penalty corners in a five minute spell, scoring from two of them.

First, Rowland-Jones scored her fifth league goal of the season in the 63rd minute, then Abi Robinson sent the ball into the top right corner of the goal, to open her account in Surbiton colours three minutes later.

On Sunday, Surbiton visit East League leaders, Maidstone for a third round Women’s Cup tie (push back 1 pm.)

Following the Futures Cup, four Surbiton girls have been selected for further assessment in National Age Group Squads. Emma Broad, Sophie Newton, and Eleanor Yianni have been selected at U16 level, and Maddie Tait at U18 level.
