Surbiton Ladies play their first matches back at Sugden Road this weekend, finding themselves in second place behind Chelmsford, on goal difference, in the England Hockey League Conference East.

They also have dreams of at least equalling last season’s Women’s Cup Quarter-Final place when they start their cup campaign on Sunday.

Surbiton needed two goals in the last three minutes to win 3-1 at Horsham on Saturday.

Emma Rowland-Jones scored from a penalty stroke to put Surbiton 2-1 up, then with one minute remaining, as Horsham anxiously sought an equaliser, Surbiton counter attacked, Helen Grant taking the ball around the goalkeeper and into the empty goal to clinch another three points.

In changeable weather conditions, Surbiton had taken the lead in the twelfth minute, Kelly Morgan scoring her debut goal for the Elmbridge based side.

But the division’s leading goalscorer, Fran Crossley, equalised eight minutes later, her seventh league goal of the season coming from a penalty corner.

Rain started to fall soon after the start of the second half, but after the brief shower, Surbiton’s spirits weren’t even dampened when Vicky Bryant had to spend five minutes in the sin-bin.

With ten minutes remaining, Surbiton increased the pace of their attack, leading to the two late goals.

Surbiton entertain Old Loughtonians in the league tomorrow (Saturday), push back 2.30pm and then start their Women’s Cup campaign against fellow Conference East team, Sevenoaks, on Sunday (push back 2pm).
