Surbiton Ladies completed their pre-season programme with a 2-2 draw versus England Hockey League Conference East rivals, Ipswich, at Reed’s School on Saturday; and a comprehensive 7-1 win over last season’s South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division Two runners-up, Teddington at St. George’s College on Monday evening.

Kelly Taylor appeared for the first time in pre-season against Ipswich, and made an immediate impact, giving Surbiton the lead from a penalty corner in the eleventh minute; and then turning goal provider for Molly Hanson Akins to score at the left post in the 26th minute.

Ipswich levelled due to a 31st minute penalty corner conversion from Emma Millar; and a 53rd minute open play goal from Hannah Martin.

Hanson Akins opened the scoring for Surbiton against Teddington in the tenth minute, Emma Rowland-Jones doubling the lead from a 17th minute penalty corner. Three minutes later, Aimee Byrne replied for Teddington, but another penalty corner conversion from Rowland-Jones in the 27th minute restored Surbiton’s two goal lead. Vicky Bryant made the score 4-1 in the 41st minute, then two minutes later, Victoria Heptonstall was in perfect position at the left post to send the ball into the roof of the net from Surbiton’s fourth penalty corner. Bryant went on to complete an open play hat-trick with further goals in the 49th and 55th minutes.

Surbiton’s first league opponents are Dereham, who won the East League last season, and are also playing in the EHL for the first time. With Sugden Road unavailable, the match will be held at Reed’s School, Cobham (push back 2.30 p.m.)
