Croydon track star Tasha Danvers has been inducted into the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Hall of Fame.

The Olympic 400m hurdles bronze medallist joined cyclist Bradley Wiggins, Paralympian David Weir, athlete Mo Farah, netballer Amanda Newton and footballer Rio Ferdinand in being honoured at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Danvers, who represented Croydon in athletics, said: “I always remember the London Youth Games as always being the biggest event of the year that my coach and I were training for.

“It was just fun and massive and now for the kids it is even more amazing because it’s the biggest annual youth sports event in Europe and I’m just happy and proud that I was a part of something so amazing.

“I think that with the numbers going up - they’ve had over 50,000 participants this year - it just shows how important sport is to youth and how much they are inspired to be a part of it. I think sport, like music, it does a lot - it’s universal. Anyone can do it and you don’t have to speak the same language but you can do sport and learn so much from it.

“It taught me how to be confident, dedicated, how to lose and how to win and it’s kept me out of a lot of things – when a lot of my friends were doing certain things, I wasn’t getting involved because I wanted to be a good sports person. It has made me a better person.”
