Surbiton completed a double over last season’s England Hockey League Conference West runners-up, Barnes Hounslow Ealing, at Reed’s School on Saturday.

Following on from their 2-0 win on the previous Monday evening, Surbiton scored their first open play goals in pre-season.

Helen Grant passed from the left to enable Hannah Oakes to score easily from close range in the 16th minute; then five minutes later, the same combination worked again as Oakes was once more at the right post to score her second goal of the match.

Dulcie Davies, the fourth goalkeeper to play for Surbiton in pre-season, kept a clean sheet; and after three matches, the squad is at last taking shape.

The scheduled game at Reed’s School on Sunday (5 September) was cancelled as Havant were unable to field a team.

Surbiton therefore have two pre-season matches remaining, versus last season’s England Hockey League Conference East champions, Ipswich on 11 September (time and venue to be confirmed), and South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division Two runners-up, Teddington, at St. George’s College, on 13 September (push back 8pm).

SURBITON LADIES: Davies (GK); Heptonstall (Capt.), Gordon, Jenkins, Hanson Akins, Robinson, Bryant, MacDonald, Rowland-Jones, Brooker, Morgan. Subs: Ford, Grant, Lynch, Oakes, Royce, Teasdale.

Surbiton’s Maddie Tait was unavailable over the weekend, as she was selected to play for England’s Under 18 Girls team in the Sainsbury UK School Games at the Newcastle University pitch.

England, who had won the championship in the last two seasons, had to settle for runners-up spot after they lost their opening game to eventual champions, Ulster 4-2, after leading 2-1 at half time. England beat Wales 2-0, and Scotland 4-2 to finish with six points; Ulster winning all three of their games.

Tait started against Ulster, and Scotland, and was named as a substitute against Wales.
