Twickenham’s Tom Meredith has warned league rivals there are plenty more runs where his fourth century of the summer came from.

The 26-year-old Australian wicketkeeper-batsman smashed a mammoth 192 at Chiswick & Latymer on Sunday, having already taken his Middlesex County League Premier Division tally to 376 in seven innings with 63 against Hampstead on Saturday.

The Perth opener - who passed his previous best of 179 for Mount Lawley down under - has set a personal target of hitting 1,000 Premier League runs this season to help preserve skipper Carlos Nunes’ men’s hard-earned top-flight status.

Test legend Adam Gilchrist - back in west London for Middlesex last week - once smashed 522 league runs to help Richmond to the title 21-years-ago, but Meredith’s hopes for his team are a little more modest.

“I joined Twickenham because I wanted to play Premier League cricket and was quite excited about playing for a club that was new to the Premiership,” he added.

“I wanted to play a part in them staying up and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t out to reach four figures.

“My target is 450 by the half-way stage and by my reckoning I’m not too far off that.

“I’m hoping we are going to stay out of the relegation zone. We want to stay up to attract better players to the club and move forward.”

Meredith’s half-century - and an unbeaten 44 from Middlesex’s Dan Housego - saw the Ts to a comfortable victory on Saturday after Jean-Piere Cronje (4-18) and Maaz Haffeji (3-19) had helped dismiss the visitors for 142.

Nunes’ men face near neighbours Teddington and champions Ealing - traditionally the league’s two strongest sides - in successive weekends.

But a narrow losing draw with second-placed Eastcote earlier this month leaves in-form Meredith believing victory is a realistic proposition.

“It was important to beat Hampstead and hopefully we can add some strength to our season now,” he added.

“A couple of decisions didn’t quite go our way against Eastcote, but we’ve shown what we can do.

“If we bat second we might have a chance of chasing down a win.”
