Discus prodigy Lawrence Okoye will represent England at the World U20 Championships in Canada next month after winning the trials in Bedford.

The 18-year-old Croydon Harrier, who played on the wing for Whitgift School when they won the Daily Mail U18 Schools Cup in March, threw his discus out to 63.92m with his sixth and final throw on Sunday to become England U20 champion.

The throw, the longest by any English U20 athlete this season and the second longest ever, earned Okoye a spot on the English team for the Championship in Moncton between July 19 and 25.

Nine other Harriers competed at Bedford, with three triple jumpers taking medals and four others finishing in the top six.

U23 Trevor Okoroafor's windy 16.00m effort won him the gold in the triple jump, as did Tunde Amosu’s legal 15.39m best in the U20 event, where Naylor Owusu-Nyanteky took silver with a windy 14.89m.

Fourth placed finishers were Jon Ilori in the U20 triple jump, Twinelle Hopeson in the U20 200m (she also came sixth in the U20 100m), U20 pole vaulter Ned Quiney and U23 long jumper Paul Ogun.

Elsewhere, the Croydon Young Athletes team got their act together to score a big McCain’s Premier League win at Chelmsford.

The club youngsters excelled to win handsomely over Bedford & County and Norwich City, moving them up to fourth in the nine team table giving them hope of a cup final place with one match remaining.
