Martyn Rooney does not care what time he runs at next month's European Championships, so long as he wins gold.
The Croydon Harrier, ranked number one in Europe this season, won the 400m event at the European Team Championships in Bergen on Saturday, holding off competition from France's Leslie Djhone and young Russian Vladimir Krasnov to cross the line in 45.67 seconds.
His quickest this year is 44.99, 0.39 down on his personal best, but the 23-year-old is more worried about crossing the line in first than fast times in Barcelona.
"I just want to run whatever it takes to win," he said.
"I don't care.
"If I run 45.8 to win I will take that."
