Tony Owen reckons he is ready for a step up in class after the Carshalton fighter eased to his seventh straight win on Saturday night.

Lightweight Owen worked his way to a comfortable four-round points victory over Kristian Laight at Bethnal Green, winning every round in the process.

And with 15 months in the pro game now behind him, the bricklayer is looking for a challenge.

Owen said: “In myself I certainly feel ready to move to the next level.

“Kristian was a step up in terms of experience and hopefully I will step up again in my next fight.

“I feel fit and I feel strong and I want to move forward.

“I am still learning in each fight but I would be more than happy if my management upped the ante next time round.”

Owen stuck to his principles at the weekend, outboxing Laight straight from the off.

And the 23-year-old was more than happy with his performance.

Owen added: “I knew he was going to be tough so I was happy to outbox him.

“I did wobble him a couple of times but I felt in control and did not want to push it.

“I am a boxer not a fighter.

“He did try to rough things up but I have been working on my inside boxing so I still felt fairly comfortable.”

The fight game now takes its summer hiatus, with Owen expecting to be back in action later this year.

But, despite that, the Carshalton man still reckons he will be busy.

Owen added: “I will probably have a week off and then hit the gym again.

“In this game you always have to be ready as you never know when the opportunity will come along, so I will keep myself active.”
