Banstead’s best start to a season for some years came to a juddering halt with a 133-run defeat by Reigate Priory at Avenue Road on Saturday, writes Mark Spring.
Missing captain Jak Martin on university duties and several key players through injury, Banstead could not recover from Priory’s batting onslaught as Chris Murtagh hit 116 and Aiden Blizzard 105.
Although Neil Saker had trapped Neil Saker lbw for 20, Murtagh and Blizzard proceeded at pace with a flurry of boundaries, while Jason Roy later added 37 off 24 balls.
A late flurry of wickets brought some relief, Jonathan Speller finishing with 4-94 and Regan Shea 3-36.
Only Alif Jaffer (79) and Daniel Sutton (58) mounted any significant resistance in response as Banstead crumbled from 165-5 to 196 all out, Simon King claiming 4-51 and Simon Day 2-27.
