Striders of Croydon men finished third of seven competing clubs, with the women fifth, at last week’s second Southern Veterans League match of the season at Ewell Court, writes Alan Dolton.

Striders’ only victory came from Steve Starvis in the over-35 3,000m (10:15.0), having taken second in the 800m (2.19.8).

Paul Stanford took a hat-trick of second places in the over-40 200m (27.6), 3,000m (11.12.8) and javelin (24.22).

Other second places were Steve Massey in the over-40 800m (2.25.5) and Alan Dolton in the over-50 3,000m (11.24.3).

Striders’ 4x400m relay team of Stanford, Massey, Starvis and Richard Lee-Smith finished the evening with a close third place in 4 minutes 10.9.

Michelle Campbell, Andrea Jeffries, Kim Ford and Dee Stanford were second in the women’s 4x400m relay, with Campbell taking fourth in the over-35 3,000m and Jeffries fourth in the 800m.

Striders men are third and women fourth ahead of next Monday’s third match of the season at Croydon Arena.

Several Striders runners were among the 516 competitors for Sunday’s Richmond 10km race, which incorporated the Surrey Championships.

Striders finishers: 77 John Foster (5th over-50) 37.00, 138 Barry White 39.32, 161 Steve Massey 40.37, 187 Nick Eaves 41.49, 329 Hannah Musk 48.22, 403 Jo Penny 51.42, 410 Amanda Barros 52.01, 420 Margaret Faherty 52.35.

John Foster produced another good run for Striders in the Richmond 10k road race, which incorporated the Surrey Championships, on Sunday.

He placed 77th of the 516 finishers and fifth in the over-50 category, recording exactly 37 minutes.

Barry White was 138th (39.32) with Steve Massey 161st (40.37) and Nick Eaves 187th (41.49). Striders’ women were led by Hannah Musk who ran 48 minutes 22, placing 329th. She was followed by Jo Penny (403rd, 51.42); Amanda Barros (410th, 52.01) and Margaret Faherty (420th, 52.35).

Nigel Davidson was fourth out of 84 runners in Saturday’s Roundshaw Downs 5km parkrun in 19 minutes, 57 seconds.

Other Striders finishers: 7 Alan Dolton (second over-50) 20.32, 41 Carmen Somerset 26.08.

Steph Upton was 25th in the Banstead Woods parkrun (21.48).
