Banstead Downs Golf Club’s Ross McGowan took another step towards Ryder Cup qualification at the US Open on Sunday.
The Cheam-based 28-year-old hit 13 over to finish tied in 40th at Pebble Beach - 13 shots behind Northern Irish winner Graeme McDowell.
It meant McGowan consolidated in the fifth qualifcation space for captain Colin Montgomerie’s team for October’s clash with the USA at Celtic Manor.
Of those closest to catching the former Madrid Masters champion, only German Martin Kaymer finished ahead of him in California - although Irishman Padraig Harrington put himseld back in contention in finishing 22nd.
McGowan, who edged past the £200,000 prize money mark for the season at the weekend, heads to Munich this week for the BMW International Open this week as he prepares for next month’s 139th Open Championship at St Andrews.
