Jimmy Ward admits he is looking forward to a well-earned rest after the Epsom boxer earned his second professional win inside a fortnight on Sunday.

Super Middleweight Ward saw off Matt Scriven over six rounds at Bethnal Green, emerging a comfortable winner despite being gashed over his eye in the third round.

And the 23-year-old reckons putting his feet up is the next thing on the agenda.

Ward said: “I am going to be taking four weeks off now and then get back in the gym soon after that.

“I have got a few niggles and injuries which just need time to clear up - nothing serious but you pick things up when you fight twice in such a short time.

“For now though the only thing on my mind is to rest up and give my body chance to recover.”

The Epsom man won all six rounds on the referee’s scorecard at York Hall to continue his promising start in the paid ranks.

But Ward revealed he feared the worst when he was cut midway through the contest.

He added: “As soon as the cut opened I was really worried the ref was going to stop the fight.

“But thankfully my corner did a really good job on it and I was able to see it out.

“I felt really good in there - I was picking my punches well and to be honest I felt fit enough to do 12 rounds.”

With two wins under his belt, Ward aims to get in at least one more fight this year.

And after so many delays, postponements and injuries, he is simply happy to have got things started.

Ward added: “I am really excited about things at the moment.

“I have proved to myself that I can do this and now I can set about achieving my goals.”
