Old Whitgiftians' captain David Ward has warned his side they must start winning to avoid a relegation battle.

OW's lost by 96 runs to Cheam on Saturday, their fifth defeat from six games this season, to leave them second bottom of division one ahead of Purley, who remain pointless after a 52 run defeat to Walton-on-Thames.

Because of his teaching commitments at Whitgift School, Ward has made just one appearance so far but hopes a return to a full-strength side next month will bring a reversal in fortunes.

"I haven't been there but from what I have heard we have not batted that well, bowled that well or fielded that well," said Ward, Whitgift's head of cricket.

"So the feedback I have got has been pretty poor.

"That is without a full-strength side though and hopefully in a couple of weeks we will get everyone out there and start making some inroads.

"We don't want to find ourselves in a relegation battle so we need to pick up a couple of wins and see if we can get ourselves up the table a bit."

Murtaza Hussain took 5-92 from a mammoth spell of 29 overs on Saturday as Cheam were bowled out for 290.

OWs batters never got going though and the home side were all out for 194.

Purley skipper Keith Medlycott took three wickets as Walton-on-Thames declared on a reachable target of 225-7, but only five Purley batsmen made double figures as they were all out for 173.

In division three, opener Kunal Patel hit 65, his highest score in first team cricket, and Gavin Piper took 5-42 as Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian beat Bank of England by four wickets.

Mansoor Mirza gave Warlingham a chance of victory in division four when he took eight wickets to reduce Cranleigh to 143 all out.

The home side collapsed to 21-5 though and were bowled out for 121, leaving them stranded at the bottom of the table.

Southern Railway & Kenley beat Staines & Laleham by one wicket, while Addiscombe lost by 44 runs to Woking & Horsell.

In division five, Zak Elkinv and Salil Oberoi both scored half centuries as Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians beat Godalming by nine wickets, and Croydon MO lost to Kingstonian by seven wickets after being all out for 94.
