New Malden racer Tom Onslow-Cole says he hasn’t even considered the possibility of chasing down British Touring Car Championship leader Matt Neal at the top of the driver’s standings.

The 23-year-old secured a whopping 34 points at Oulton Park last time out, but was only able to eat three points into Neal’s lead at the summit.

Onslow-Cole heads to Croft this weekend looking for a repeat performance, but he insists his first priority is getting his Team Aon Ford Focus ST to the finish line.

“I haven’t really thought about the championship in all honesty. I’m just taking each weekend as it comes,” he said.

“Obviously I’m aware of the bigger picture in terms of what we can do as a team. It is a case of keeping doing what we’ve been doing.

“We need to keep finishing as many races as possible and if we can get one or two wins in there, then we should be in pretty good shape.

“It is all about scoring points. While I had a good weekend, I’m still 22 points behind Matt so I’ve got make sure I keep scoring.”

Onslow-Cole, who qualified in pole position at Oulton, overcame new engine restrictions on his car’s Liquified Petroleum Gas set-up to claim a second win of the season.

But race rules will make it much harder in North Yorkshire this week.

“The restrictions mean we are not as fast in a straight line, but the work we have done on developing the chassis has given us more speed in the corners,” he added.

“Because we are fourth in the championship we’re going to be carrying more ballast. It is going to tighten things up a lot.

“Qualifying is key. It is easier to win races from the front than having to make your way through the field.”

And he believes the six remaining race weekends could be tailor-made for a title push.

“I’ve got most of my bogey circuits out of the way now. I like Croft and hopefully the tracks over the second half of the season are going to suit us,” he said.
