Carshalton’s Lenny Daws has told Frankie Gavin to get in line after the precocious 24-year-old announced he plans to be British Light-Welterweight champion by the end of 2010.

Gavin, Britain’s first ever World Amateur Champion, made the claim in an interview following a recent first-round win at Upton Park.

But title-holder Daws reckons ‘Funtime Frankie’ is getting a bit ahead of himself.

He said: “I have heard the talk and I have heard him calling me out but I am not too concerned.

“He has only had seven fights and he is still at a six-round level so I think he is a bit off title standard yet.

“Frankie needs to step up in class and gets some rounds under his belt and show he deserves it.

“Of course he is extremely talented but in this game there is no substitute for experience.

“He looks great as he is getting people out of there, but how will he cope when somebody stands there and comes back at him?

“If he proves he can cut it I would love to fight him down the line, but I might not be champion or even in boxing when he gets to that level.”

Daws is in limbo at the moment as he awaits confirmation of his next fight.

And the 31-year-old admits it has been a frustrating month or so.

Daws added: “At the moment it is just a case of playing the waiting game.

“I would have liked to have got another fight in over the summer and I may still be in the ring in July.

“But nothing has been sorted yet and time is going on.

“I am keeping myself busy and training well so that would not be a problem, it would simply be a matter of upping the intensity.”
