Woodmansterne entered this first XI fixture in a confident mood having started the season well.

Having lost the toss Woods were asked to bat first and posted a total of 195.

Several Woods players got themselves in but failed to convert into big innings including Tom Wortley 36, Richard Knight 33 and Robert Hicks 28. George Simms made a good 25 to help elevate the score to 195.

Robin Singh 4-48 was the main tormentor of the Woods batting line up.

In reply Woods decided to open with spin bowlers at both ends hoping for early breakthroughs this came off Wortley courtesy of a great diving catch by Hicks unfortunately dropped catches costs Woods as they preceded to drop Joubert (43) and Khan (41) four times. So instead of having WandGas on the ropes they were allowed to recover to 80-1.

The introduction of George Sims &  Martin Corbetts (3 – 26) brought Woods back into the match and at 6 down Woods believed  they could push for victory but steady batting fromWheeler (30no) and Singh (38no) saw the visitors home by four wickets.

Byfleet CC 2nd XI 183 – 7 Woodmansterne CC 2nd XI 216ao

The 2s were left disappointed despite a winning draw at Byfleet. Byfleet put Woods into bat and openers Hiren and Goodwin got off to another good start, with Goodwin smashing several boundaries to prevent the Byfleet opening bowlers from settling.

However a lapse of communication caused a messy run-out, as Hiren miscued a drive to backward point, called a single, but hesitation meant Jamie (28) was out by a few inches.

In fairness to Goodwin there was never a single there, and Hiren should have known better.

It meant that the hard work was undone as Hiren (34) and Chirag (15) then got bogged down by the change bowlers, followed by another uncharacteristically short innings from Ian Miller who was bowled by the canny spinner Abid Zia.

Jan Lever 62), dropped down the order proved his value in that position, steadying the innings and taking singles at every opportunity.

He and Jacobs put on 61 before Jacobs (27) was bowled by Zia as he decided to have a go. The lower order big hitters of Selby and Movel failed to explode, and Woods were eventually bowled out for 216.

Given that Byfleet had chased down 270 the previous week, Woods knew it would be tough going, and it started that was as Byfleet raced to 109 despite an early wicket from Selby.

Movel was used from one end after Aldous suffered from a stich, and perhaps tried a little too much with the ball, even utilising two leg slips at one stage.

Crucial drops at 3 stages of the game didn't help. The slower bowlers of Bull and Hiscox performed admirably, especially Hiscox who followed up last week’s 5 wicket haul by bagging 3-13.

Despite a belated re-introduction of Aldous, it was all a little too late as Woods failed to claim the last 3 Byfleet wickets and were left to ponder what could have been as Byfleet themselves finished on 187 for 7.

Woodmansterne 3rd XI – 296-8 dec    Chobham CC 3rd XI   55ao

The Saturday 3rd XI continued their winning ways with an emphatic win over a weakened 10 man Chobham side, by 241 runs.

Chobham who won the toss elected to field and got off to an excellent start by dismissing the first three Woodmansterne batsmen (Evan Whyte 0, Jake Callaghan 1 and Ralph Patel 5) within the first 4 overs, for 12 runs.

This was the last time that Chobham were to be on top as Jay K Patel and George Bunn began to punish the Chobham bowling adding 77 runs 9 overs, before George Bunn (27) was caught and Steve Scott joined Jay K. at the crease.

Woodmansterne continued the onslaught and added another 65 runs off 6 overs, before Jay K. Patel (86) played a lose shot and was caught.

However, this did not slow the Woodmansterne scoring as first Neil Patel (15) added 49 runs with Steve Scott, in 5 overs.

Then Phil Wells (11) put on 32 in 4 overs with Steve Scott, before Mickey Joyce (18 not out) and Steve added a further 61 runs in 7 overs before Steve Scott was finally out the ball following the completion of his first League century.

At this point Woodmansterne decided to declare on 296 for 8 off 34.2 0vers.

Had the Woodmansterne Captain been aware of how close they were to the league record 3rd XI score then he may have delayed the declaration, by an over or two.

The Woodmansterne declaration left Chobham the target of scoring 297 off 61 overs, after tea. Following the interval Woodmansterne decided to open the attack with Ralph Patel and Phil Wells, using the old ball.

Chobham looked to be making a reasonable start when they reached 20 without loss, but from there on they began to lose wickets in quick succession as first Ralph Patel dismissed the Z.

Cheeseman (0) caught by Phil Wells in the slips and then bowled W. Dawson (0).

Phil Wells then joined in by trapping D. Pearce(17) LBW, having I. Crook (0) caught by Evan Whyte, at square leg, then R, Grant (6) again caught by Evan Whyte, at square leg, then AJ Sutharsan (19) stumped by George Miller and bowling T. Sears (5).

Ralph Patel then bowled K. Sutharsan (0). This left the last pair in for Chobham and Phil Wells finally ended the game when he bowled K.

Sutharsan (5), leaving C Crook as the not out batsman and Chobham all out for 55 off 19.4 overs. Phil Wells ended with bowling figures of 9.4-0-34-6 and Ralph Patel 10-1-19-3.

Despite Jay K. Patel’s 86 and Phil Wells 34-6 the man of the match was Steve Scott for his league 100 for Woodmansterne.
