Beddington’s Charlie Edwards lifted the fifth national title of his career at the weekend before revealing he could be about to split from technical trainer Gary Hale.

The 17-year-old Hollington ABC fighter became the English ABA lightflyweight junior champion in Barnsley on Saturday after beating Samson Sykes 15-13 at the Metrodome.

Hale, a pool coach for the Great Britain squad, has had a major impact on Edwards’ career thus far, but quit his club last week to head up a new-look coaching team at Lynn Boxing Club.

The 45-year-old, who has worked with the likes of Frankie Gavin and James Degale, has also taken two-time Commonwealth Games silver medalist - and AFC Wimbledon fan - Darren Langley with him to Camberwell-based club.

He is thought to want Edwards - and his younger brother Sonny - to join him, but the England team captain admits things are a little complicated.

“Gary is leaving after only a year for another club. He has been head hunted,” he said.

“They want me and my brother to go there as well, but don’t want my dad, who is main trainer, coach and manager, involved.

“He has been behind all my domestic and international successes. It seems there is a fair amount of politics kicking around.”

The Beacon High School sixth former Edwards, who dedicated his weekend win to his late great grandad, jets off to the Ukraine for the Klitchko Cup international tournament next month, before preparing for the Singapore Youth Olympics in August.
