After the disappointment of finishing last in their opening Southern League encounter, Croydon Harrier's women struck back in style on Saturday with victory in their latest fixture, writes Matthew Kiernan.

Sprinter Joscelynn Hopeson showed signs of the form that secured her a Great Britain junior international vest in 2006, when completing the 100m (12.4s) and 200m (26.3s) double.

Three-time Olympian Donna Fraser made a welcome return to the athletics fold in her first season since international retirement, by winning the B-String 100m in 12.7s.

Hopeson and Fraser then combined with Charlette Campbell and Amy Dowsett to round off the day with victory in the 4x100m thanks to a 51.8s clocking.

Team manager Anna Campbell produced the pick of the field performances with a 27.35m effort in the javelin for second, while Miriam De Souza’s pick of her six events came in the 3000m with a lifetime best of 13:33.

There were also solid performances from Mandy Rowley-Jones (High jump, 1.35m), Amy Dowsett (200m, 28.3s), Linda Harrison (Hammer, 16.05m) and Kymberley Campbell (100m hurdles, 30.5s).

In a busy weekend for the Harriers, the U20’s squad produced an array of impressive performances in their latest National Junior league fixture in Dartford on Sunday.

Oweka Wanogho enhanced his reputation by storming home in the 100m (11.0s) and 200m (22.4s) to win comfortably, while Andre Gibbs (100m, 11.1s) and Josh Atille (200m, 23.0s) enjoyed similar success in the B-String races.

The enigmatic trio then combined with Cameron Smith, to emphatically take the 4x100m honours, stopping the clock at 43.3s.

In the women’s equivalent, Kayon Christie, Seraphina Beh, Serena Phillips and Davine Dubidad ran solidly to finish fifth in a time of 53.9s.

Elsewhere, Duane Adekoya cleared 1.65m in the high jump for fourth, while there were lifetime bests for Peter Chambers (800m, 2:03.9), Mark Plackett (800m, 2.10.0) and Scott Fanner (400m, 54.6s).

Away from the track, the Harrier’s road-running squad rounded off Croydon’s diverse weekend of action with an encouraging display at the Dorking 10-mile road race.

Debutante David White spearheaded Croydon’s challenge finishing an impressive 28th in a time of 64:06.

The 23 year-old was ably supported by David Brown (74:04, 116th), Keith Brown (78:04, 161st) and Norman Hemming (90:07, 302nd) in the near 500 strong field.
