Brian McDermott has challenged his Harlequins RL side to stick to their attacking principles after the Londoners hauled themselves off the foot of Super League last weekend.

Quins stunned league leaders Wigan with a 38-26 win at the DW Stadium, bouncing back from a 24-6 interval deficit with a six-try display.

And, having seen his charges earn back-to-back wins for the first time this campaign, McDermott wants more of the same when Quins meet Hull at Murrayfield this weekend.

He said: “Since the Huddersfield game a month ago we have really turned things up in terms of free-flowing rugby.

“Over the past few games we have scored a lot of tries, and we are not talking about tries we have jagged or anything like that.

“We are coming up with shapes and throwing things at people and they cannot handle it.

“We have a lot of players that if you create the space they will go through it.

“The wins is just a matter of progress, but the style with which we are doing it is a real cause for optimism.”

Luke Dorn (two), David Howell, Will Sharp, Rob Purdham and Chad Randall grabbed tries at Wigan as Quins earned just their second win of the campaign.

And with a near full-strength squad to pick from, McDermott insists the result should not be seen as the earth-shattering triumph some have claimed.

He added: “People were asking me afterwards what has mystically happened in London over the last few weeks but there is nothing mystical about it, we just have our front line players back.

“The players were shell-shocked at half-time as we had not done much wrong, but there was a real desire to put that right and they went out there and did that.”

Harlequins travel to Scotland this weekend for the Murrayfield Magic weekend, where they meet Hull FC.

But they will do so without Ben Jones-Bishop after the on-loan full back suffered a depressed fracture of the skull at Wigan and is likely to be sidelined for six weeks.

McDermott added: “It is a big blow, both for him and us.

“I cannot speak highly enough of Ben - everyone knows what he is like with ball in hand but I have been more impressed with his defence.

“He has saved us a number of tries even though everyone considers him an attacking-style full-back.

“The good news is we will have him back for the last six or seven rounds so we have not seen the last of him.”

Harlequins RL’s next three matches: May 1 Hull (Murrayfield Magic), 9 St Helens (CC, h), 16 Castleford (h)
