Teenager Elliot Safo boosted his chances of representing Britain at next month’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Moscow on Sunday.

Safo, 16, who competes for Croydon Harriers, produced the performance of the day at Hercules Wimbledon’s annual young athletes’ meeting held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

The reigning English indoor U17 long jump champion, leapt 7.24m with his opening effort to add 24cm to his previous best.

The previous event best of 6.78m was set by Herne Hill’s Ezekiel Ewulo in 2002.

Safo, who then managed further leaps of 7.14m and 6.92m, is in action against tomorrow at the Sward/Kinnaird meeting at Kingsmeadow.

He was one of four winners to break records at Crystal Palace.

Herne Hill Harriers’ Surrey indoor champion Vanessa La Fon was pushed by a 5.5mps tailwind as she won the girls’ U15 100m (12.19 seconds).

South London Harriers’ Josh Street won the U17 100m in 10.84, backed by 3.5mps headwind.

Belgrave Harriers’ Wade Bennett-Jackson had jointly held the previous record of 10.9, set in 2003.

The fourth record-breaker was Blackheath & Bromley’s Maya Bruney, who set a meeting record time of 26.81 seconds in winning the girls’ U13 200m in 13.7 seconds.

There was an international flavour to the meeting as two athletes flew over from Malta, both setting personal best times in their 800m events.

Nicole Gatt, won the girls’ U15 800m (2:26.32), was third in the 200m (27.87) and fifth in the 100m (13.70).

Thomas Farrugia was runner-up in his men’s U17 200m (23.58) and fourth in the 800m (2:05.72).
