Richmond Canoe Club kayaker Richard Hendron with James King of Army won the 2010 Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon over the Easter Weekend.

Overcoming deceptively tough conditions as cold temperatures plummeted on the overnight section of the race, Hendron and King managed to push through to finish the 125-mile course in a time of 16 hours and 20 minutes.

Competing in his tenth DW campaign, Hendron achieved his fastest time so far. “It was tougher than I expected,” said Hendron, reflecting on a strategy that pushed along the Kennet & Avon Canal section of the course, leaving him and King near to exhaustion as they pushed hard down the River Thames from Reading to the finish at Westminster Bridge.

Richmond crews produced good results across the race. Piran Shelley and Russ Dawkins finished third, with Rob Stainsby and Paul Hayes finishing fifth, in a field of 154 entrants in the Senior Doubles non-stop race.

Lizzie Broughton won the Senior Ladies prize in the Singles. Ian Lavarack won the Masters prize (over 50) in the Singles and Sean Martin won the C1 prize in the Singles.

Richmond also won the Senior Doubles team prize and the Singles team prize.
