Sam Atkinson lifted Epsom District Swimming Club’s first county trophy for many years on the final day of this year’s Surrey Championships.

The 18-year-old clocked one minute, 56.02 seconds to win the men’s 200m freestyle, achieving a national qualifying time in the process.

In total, Epsom won 11 golds, eight silvers and 11 bronzes, placing them eighth out of 22 clubs in Surrey.

Golds went to Nathalie Richards in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and the 1,500m freestyle, while Atkinson also took gold in the 800m and 1,500m freestyle.

Robert Hegarty won the 200m fly and 200m backstroke, with Ella Kenway claiming victory in the 200m freestyle.

Other medal winners: Kylie Benney, Fredi Penniket-Dessent, Lucy Archer-Lock, Charlotte Reynolds, Diane Anstis and Arthur Hogarth.

Members also set 20 club records and a host of personal bests.

Head coach Adam Mason said: “The hard work and dedication they have shown in preparing for these Championships has definitely paid off. “We are now looking forward to the south easts and the nationals later on this year.”
