Surbiton hosted the England Hockey U14 Girls’ South Regional final on Sunday, with Canterbury defeating Sunbury 4-1.

Six teams qualified for the finals, split into two pools of three teams, with the winners of each pool qualifying for the final.

Canterbury opened the tournament with an emphatic 9-1 win over Horsham, but the highlight of the match came when Horsham scored their goal, as the players’ body language showed what the goal meant to the team.

Canterbury clinched their place in the final with a 4-1 win over Teddington, who finished second in pool one after a 5-0 win over Horsham.

Sunbury virtually sealed their place in the final with a 4-1 opening win over hosts, Surbiton.

Rhianna Miller pulled a goal back for Surbiton after Sunbury had taken a 2-0 lead, but Sunbury added two further goals to complete an impressive victory.

A second-minute goal from Surbiton’s Georgia Morse was enough to beat Woking in the second pool game, but with a negative goal difference, Surbiton were left unable to qualify.

Woking themselves needed to beat Sunbury by a three-goal margin in the final match to reach the final, but with three minutes left, the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw, even though both sides had had chances to score.

Woking took the lead, but Sunbury protected their unbeaten record with an equalising goal in the penultimate minute.

In the final, Sunbury scored in the second minute, but Canterbury used their experience to lead 2-1 by half time, and scored two goals in the second half to become South Regional Champions.

On Saturday, Surbiton’s U16 Girls lost 2-1 to Lytham St Annes in the final of the England Hockey Plate in Nottingham, Kate Holmes scoring Surbiton’s goal from a penalty stroke.

Surbiton had reached the final with a 2-0 semi-final win over Reading, Ellie Tait scoring both goals.
