Distraught ice dancer Phillipa Towler-Green says she will continue in the sport despite missing out on next year's Winter Olympics.

The 25-year-old from Kenley and her partner Phillip Poole, who train at Streatham Ice Rink, had been in position to claim Team GB's second figure skating spot at the games but could only finish fourth at last weekend's British Championships.

Instead, world number five couple Sinead and John Kerr will be joined by Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland who took second place at the Championships in Sheffield.

"I am very upset because it was so close and we have done so much work for it," she said.

"There's a new couple that have come along and taken everything away.

"There was four couples battling for second spot but all season long we have all been up and down and beating each other and it could have been anyone but they came out on top.

"It's hard when you have had that second spot for a few years but then someone else comes along and takes it.

"Any other year but an Olympic year it would have been a little better."

Despite being named as reserves should one of the chosen couples pull out, so angry was Phillip after the decision he vowed to walk away from the sport, leaving Phillipa in need of a new partner.

"We know straight away on the Saturday evening and my partner has given up," she says.

"It's all been a weird two days for me and I am still undecided but probably will carry on.

"I will be 29 at the next Olympics and the current British Champion is 31 so I will still be able to do it and I would like to give it one more try.

"We should be reserves but Phillip was very angry and I am not sure he will come back."
