Epsom relied on stheir set-pieces in a scrappy 4-2 win over London Edwardians in Surrey/Hants League Division One.

It was against the roof of play that top scorer Mike Atkinson crashed Epsom into the lead, but the visitors soon levelled.

Manager Martin Wales responded by rejigging Epsom’s line-up and, after Wade Joubert and Alex Pizzey had gone close, Russell Tebay eventually slammed home a loose ball to give Epsom a 2-1 half-time lead.

Soon after half-time they were given breathing space when Paul Atkinson deflected home Mike Atkinson’s disguised hit.

But Edwardians battled back into the game with their second goal, before Epsom rounded things off when James Midmer deflected home Win Joubert’s pinpoint drag flick.

Even after this, Epsom were grateful for some alert work from keeper Colin Savage, who came off his line to deny Edwardians a number of times.

Epsom stay third in the league, but will have to be much improved at league leaders Richmond this weekend.

In Division Two, Epsom II won 5-3 at Andover, while the thirds beat Walton II 2-1 in Surrey Division Three.

Epsom Ladies bounced back from the previous weekend’s defeat at Reading in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Hampstead & Westminster last weekend.

After a bright start, Epsom took the lead when Sammie Archer finished superbly after being put through by Stacey Bone.

There was a touch of fortune about Hampstead’s equaliser as a flick from a penalty corner appeared to be heading wide before deflecting in off the body of captain Laura Fragley.

But, with two minutes left, Sarah White won the match for Epsom with a penalty stroke to lift them back to fourth in South Premier League Division One.
