Last Saturday’s South of the Thames five-mile event at Sparrows Den was again well represented by South London Harriers.

The women, hopeful of another win this year, were just beaten into silver medal position by Dulwich Runners’ three point lead after a close battle.

Beckie Woodland had another brilliant run to place third in 33.26 minutes, Pippa Major was sixth in 35.21, Ruth Hutton was seventh in 35.40 and Christine Costiff was ninth in 36.32.

In the men’s race, the SLH team were ninth in the four to score race and fourth in the eight to score.

Andy Collins was first man home for the club in 35th (31.03), Dave Ogden was 41st (31.23), Alex Halpin was 52nd (32.21) and Paul Mitchell was 56th (32.33).

John Foss was 67th (33.10), Mark Burtwell was 72nd (33.39), Ian Taylor was 81st (34.06) and Bill Arnold was 102nd (35.44).

It was Mark Burtwell’s second outing of the day, having hared four children’s races in the morning organised by SLH at the Oasis Academy at Coulsdon.

Last weekend members from the club had taken part in the Beckenham 10 trail race with the following results: Viv Mitchell 46th, 47.58; Warwick Bilham 63rd, 50.00; Sue Bottle, 75th, 51.25; Jane Luxton, 92nd, 52.55.

This Saturday (tomorrow), South London Harriers will be hosting their annual 10 mile cross country race, The Pirie 10, on Farthing Downs starting at 2pm.
