Banstead Downs Golf Club star Ross McGowan is hoping a strong performance at the Dubai World Championships next week, can strengthen his position in the Ryder Cup rankings before the turn of the year.

The 27-year-old finished tied 24th at the Barclays Singapore Open last week to pocket 32,582Euros taking his season's haul to 843,045Euros and 26th in the European Tour's Race to Dubai standings.

The Cheam-based golfer claimed his maiden Tour title in October with a three-shot victory at the Madrid Masters, which had put him second in the Ryder Cup – played at Welsh course Celtic Manor next year – qualification race before slipping back to sixth.

McGowan will begin his bid for glory in the Middle East next Thursday when Europe's top 60 golfers - including fellow Cheam resident and new World Matchpaly Golf champion Ross Fisher and Weybridge's Paul Casey - go head-to-head for a share of $7.5million.
