Jason Phillips, from St Paul's School in Barnes, has just come back form the Junior World Rowing Championships having won the Gold Medal.

Phillips, competing as a member of the Great Britain Rowing Team's junior men's four, Britain's flagship crew, won the Gold Medal in some style, dominating the strongest field this event as ever seen.

In their heat the four were particularly impressive, leading through all the timing points to qualify for Semi-finals.

In their semi-final the British crew were led to halfway, by a strong Australian crew, but their strength and endurance showed through in the second half of the race, as they eased into the lead to win the race and set themselves up as favourites for the final.

In the final, the Australian crew went off very fast, with the British in second. They battled with the Australians throughout and there was also early pressure from the USA.

However they eased into the lead by halfway, overhauling the fast-starting Australians and were never threatened from that point.

They finally took the gold by a margin of just under three seconds at the world junior championships.

This is a huge margin at this level of competition, and a testament to the quality of this crew, and the exceptional determination, dedication and talent of the four boys onboard.
