Belgrave Harrier Philips Idowu took just one jump to claim his fifth Aviva National men’s triple jump title at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Sunday.

The Beijing Olympic silver medallist ended his short day at the office after posting an opening round winning effort of 17.05m and books his place for the forthcoming World Championships.

Clubmate Samson Oni is confident he can still book his ticket for Berlin despite falling well short of the high jump A qualifying standard of 2.31m for the worlds.

The 28-year-old cleared 2.24, the same as winner Germaine Mason, but had to settle for second on countback.

Oni has already achieved the B qualifying standard of 2.29m at Aviva International Indoors in Glasgow back in January but said: “I am satisfied with second place but I’ve would of been happy if I achieved the A qualifying mark here today.

“I have got the London Grand Prix Crystal Palace and another meet before that to get the A mark.

“The Palace one will be a big one for me. I’m going to prepare for that if I’m going to win it.”
