Sutton’s mini water polo team came second out of 33 boroughs in the London Youth Games last week - even though they were younger than their rivals in the event.
Sutton’s route to success was far from straight forward because when Sutton were first asked to select a team they had a squad too young to meet the requirements for entry however Sutton were keen to play their part in the inaugural appearance of the sport at the games so the organisers agreed they would allow the Sutton youngsters, some 3 to 4 years younger than their opponents, to compete.
Coaches Mickey Helps and Richard Humphries said of their performance “To finish as high as they did was a great Team result on its own but to do it with such young players showed great character and spirit from this team. They should be very proud of what they have just taken part in and achieved.”
Squad: Natalie Andrew ,April Hedges,George Brown ,Natasha Gomm ,Ben Humphries , Michael Rees, Matthew Helps ,Bethan Helps ,Isaac Tidy ,Sam Rees, James Maynard ,Ashley Castle.
