Banstead skipper Jak Martin reckons his young side are more than capable of avoiding Surrey Championship Premier Division relegation and could even spring a surprise at league leaders Sutton on Saturday.

The 20-year-old watched Mark Houghton (6-20) and Dan Gale (3-30) destroyed Spencer at the weekend to collect only their second league win of the season and move away from the drop zone.

The pair of left arm spinners wrapped the visitors up in knots as they were dismissed for 111, before Martin’s men knocked off the runs for the loss of just three wickets.

The Avenue Road captain has admitted the first half of the campaign has been a little hit and miss, but he is confident his side is moving in the right direction.

“On paper there is no reason why we can’t beat anyone in this league,” he said.

“Everyone here has had their time with Surrey either in the second team or in the age groups, so we are more than capable of performing at this level.

“At times we have batted well and then bowled badly - and vice versa - but the weekend’s result shows things are coming together.”

Banstead travel to Sutton at the weekend for the first time in the top flight since 2003 and Martin reckons the omens are good.

“Mark and Dan bowled superbly and with Matt Spriegel coming back next week, we are going to have three quality spinners in our side anda few more of our regulars back” he added.

“We are just as good as them. A win would shake the table up a little and the 13 points would do our season a power of good.”

Sutton were denied their seventh win of the Premier Division season after Weybridge’s second rearguard action in as many weeks foreced them settle for a winning draw at the weekend.

Skipper Phil Sampson’s men are undefeated in eight games thus far and are 13 points clear of second-placed Reigate Priory - who they are yet to face.

A 151-run opening partnership between Zoheb Sharif (88) and John Fry (81) laid the foundation for their side to post a commanding 258 for 6 at Hanger Hill on Saturday.

Sampson (4-53) led the Sutton bowling attack as Weybridge collapsed to 158-8 in reply with only Gavin Franklin (65) showing any resistence after his team were left struggling at 29-4 inside the opening ten overs.
