Brian McDermott has revealed his ruthless streak may come to the fore again this week as he looks to put an end to Harlequins RL’s mid-season blip.

A crushing defeat by Leeds was followed by a last-gasp 20-18 loss at Wakefield on Sunday, a result which saw the play-off chasing pack close in on the Londoners.

And ahead of a tricky trip to Wigan on Friday night, McDermott insisted he was not afraid to make changes.

He said: “A couple of the players were reported as having knocks before last weekend, but the truth of the matter is is that they were dropped.

“We are not performing at the moment, and we have to make sure that this is nothing more than a blip.

“The team will change again against Wigan as I was not happy with the performance at Wakefield either.

“The players have to become more accountable.

“We have ten games left and the players should have all learned their lessons by now.

“We have a formula in place that brings us success, and if players cannot adhere to that then I will put somebody in there that will.”

Jamie O’Callaghan and Matt Gardner were drafted in on Sunday, but it was another stand-in, Luke Gale, who once again impressed, crossing for a try along with Danny Orr and Chad Randall.

And McDermott is predicting another tight contest at the JJB Stadium.

He added: “Wigan could be the dark horses of Super League in my opinion.

“They can beat any team in the competition.

“They are in indifferent form, but I know that is something that their coach Brian Noble relishes.

“We just have to concentrate on going up there, performing well and doing our jobs.”
