Weybridge Cricket Club skipper Abeed Janmohammed is confident he has the team to retain the club’s Surrey Championship Premier Division status after securing its second triumph in the three games at the weekend.

Janmohammed’s men began the season slowly having secured the First Division title last season with the assistance of New Zealand one-day international Grant Elliott.

A financial decision not to recruit an overseas professional this summer means the captain is reliant on a group of talented youngsters, with Surrey-contracted opener Seren Waters emerging as the pick of the bunch.

The 19-year-old all-rounder notched 65 in Saturday’s seven wicket triumph over Banstead - which also saw him collect 3-11 with the ball - to continue Weybridge’s move away from the drop zone having only secured their first win of th season two weeks earlier.

And Janmohammed believes improving results prove he has the depth in his squad to ensure Premier Division survival.

“I always said that I’d be happy at the end of the season if we finished somewhere around the middle of the table,” he said.

“We took a financial decision not to recruit an overseas player because I think we have the squad capable of achieving our goal.

“The results have come even though we have been missing about six first team regulars over the last couple of weeks, so that shows we have the depth necessary to compete at this level.

“We played good cricket at the weekend and were excellent in the field. With players coming back there are going to be some selection problems, but they are good problems to have.”

Waters’ knock - alongwith 44 from the skipper - helped Weybridge claim victory after Banstead had been dismissed for 158 as they slip into relegation trouble themselves having failed to win since the opening day of the season.

Sutton maintained their grip on the Premier Division leadership with a winning draw at second-placed Wimbledon having been set a total of 256 for eight, thanks to Tim Carter (51), Mohammed Jaffer (60) and Croydon-born wicketkeeper Dan Pratt (47*).

Skipper Phil Sampson’s side comfortably batted out for the winning draw reaching 222-8 at close of play, despite the efforts of Wimbledon’s Tarim Nathula (6-53).

Ian Hewett’s 6-31 saw Cobham Avorians dismissed for 152, as Reigate Priory claimed victory by six wickets, while Pierre Jason (85) and Neil Baker (56) couldn’t stop Spencer slumping to a three wicket defeat to Sunbury having been dismissed for 186.

A 46-run last-wicket stand between Neil Mander (34*) and Simon Crampton (17) saw Malden Wanderers come within three overs of avoiding defeat at Guildford.

But 101 from Carman Mapatune for the home side proved the difference between the two sides as the visitors were dismissed for 162 chasing 270 for seven.
