The Blue Square Greyhound Derby takes place at Wimbledon Stadium this Saturday – the climax to a thrilling competition.

More than 140 entries have been whittled down to the six Derby finalists, who are each in with a chance of winning the £100,000 first prize and taking their place in history.

The line-up for the final sees traps one to six filled by Fear Zafonic, Ballymac Ruso, Farloe Reason, Glenard Sunrise, Kinda Ready and Wise Thought.

The Captain, Wimbledon’s resident tipster, has been studying the form of each of the finalists.

“With Wise Thought being the only wide seed, he automatically draws trap six, which is a massive boost for this dog, who boasts tremendous all-round pace,” he said.

“Kinda Ready could be drawn nearer the rails but will run his heart out for connections, who I’m sure will be very proud to have made the final.

“Glenard Sunrise is running very well for Patsy Byrne, who has tasted Derby success before.

“Patsy also has Ballymac Ruso drawn in trap two. However, he’ll need to be on his toes at the trap rise but, if he’s leading, will be very hard to catch.

“Both Farloe Reason and Fear Zafonic are trained by the man himself, Charlie Lister, who is no stranger to Derby glory.

“Both have excellent chances of taking the prize, especially Fear Zafonic.

“Fear Zafonic, who is drawn in trap one, donning his favourite red jacket, could finally lay the trap one derby jinx to rest, and has come a long way starting out as the original favourite at the start of the competition.”

On the night of the final there will be 14 races and guests will be greeted by a steel band.

Doors open at 4.30pm and admission is £12 for the grandstand and £10 for the Mick the Miller enclosure. Customers are advised to arrive early.
