St Mary’s Richmond’s senior men dominated their second midweek Rosenheim League meeting of the season at Walton last week, writes Bob Sly.

It means that, after two matches, the men are top of their table with 10 points.

Among their winners were Jimmy Goulis, who has only been running on the track for a year having specialised in long distance events. He won the 800m at Walton (2:02.5) as well as the 3,000m as a non-scoring athlete (9:06.9).

Match winner in that event was Grant Bridgman, 17, in 9:08.0 - a 32-second on his personal best. He was also second in the javelin (47.17m).

Adam Villard won the 1,500m in a personal best 4:33.6 and another 16-year-old, Sean Lee Rice, won the long jump with a personal best 5.90m.

Nigel Rothwell 42, won the 2,000m steeplechase (7:29.0) with Paul Derrien, 37, winning the discus (35.21m). Despite being in borrowed spikes, Chris James, 37, was second in the high jump (1.70m).

Simon Chapple recorded his best times of the year in finishing second in the 100m (11.7 seconds) and third in the 200m (23.7 seconds).

Joe Cumberbatch, 17, competing in the 400m for the first time, was third (53.4 seconds).

Peter Robinson, 54, jumped 1.40m in the high jump as a guest - his best height for four years.

The women, lacking throwers, were second in their match and remain second in the league.
