Surbiton’s U16 Wrens team retained the Home Counties Girls Under 16 League championship on Sunday, beating Reading 3-1 at Sugden Road on Sunday afternoon.

After winning all six of their divisional league games, the Wrens qualified for the inter-division knockout competition to decide the overall league champions. On the way to the final the Wrens had beaten Aylesbury 11-0 at home in the quarter-final, and Sunbury 4-1 at Hampton Community College in the semi-final.

On a very hot day, The Wrens needed just four minutes to take the lead, Olivia Cooke smashing Emma Broad’s pass against the backboard. Four minutes later, Reading were back on level terms, Chloe Lyons equalising for the visitors. A minute later, the Wrens attacked, with Ellie Tait, having had her first two shots saved, scoring with her third attempt to restore their lead at 2-1.

Lucy Clacher almost added a third goal just before half time, but her shot hit the right post and travelled across the goal, with the Reading defence breathing a sigh of relief, as they remained just 2-1 down at the interval.

With both teams planning their substitutions to enable their players to cope with the heat, there were plenty of scoring chances in the second half, but the Wrens’ victory wasn’t clinched until three minutes from the end. The ball was scrambled over the goal-line, with some confusion about which attacking player scored. After the game, the Wrens decided that their third goal should be jointly credited to Caitlin Keep and Emma Broad.

The Wrens’ captain, Kate Holmes received the League trophy from Judith Jones, who will take over from Wendy Beaney as the league secretary from next season.

Sugden Road also staged the Under 14 and Under 18 league finals. Teddington won both, defeating Woking 4-0, with all four goals coming in the first half. Molly Costello opened the scoring in the sixth minute, Ellen Patterson doubled the lead six minutes later, Phoebe Trillo scored the third in the 19th minute, before Annabel Sams converted Teddington’s first penalty corner in the 21st minute.

In the U18 final, Teddington recovered from conceding an early goal to beat Horsham 4-2. Emily Smith’s first minute goal gave Horsham an early advantage, but two goals from Grace McGeehan in the 11th and 31st minutes ensured that Teddington led 2-1 at the break. Emily Jones equalised for Horsham with a 41st minute penalty corner conversion, but ten minutes later Rebecca Eaton restored Teddington’s lead. McGeehan completed her hat-trick in the 58th minute to make the final score 4-2.
