New Malden’s Gary Marks clinched the Epsom pro-am by one shot today after carding a four-under-par 66.

The World of Golf professional, who won the 2006 PGA south region Order of Merit, finished ahead of Tyrrells Wood Golf Club’s Rob Humphrey in second.

Banstead Downs’s James Carter clinched third with a two-under 68, while three players - Neil Reilly, Ian Campbell and current Order of Merit leader Andrew Raitt - shared third place after posting 69s.

Afterwards, Marks expressed relief that a missed putt at the 17th hole was not more costly.

“I missed my putt from a foot on the 17th when I was five under,” he said. “That could have been crucial but I had a two-shot lead and luckily it didn’t cost me the win.

“It’s a tough course here. It’s on a hill and you have shots you don’t get at any other course.

“You’ve got to try and run the ball into some really slopey greens. I played pretty well and I’m pleased to have won.

“I had a bad couple of games earlier in the week but won last week so my form has been a bit on and off. I always feel reasonably confident and I've realised I’ve just got to get my head down and see what happens.”

Marks completed a fine few days by finishing runner-up in the PGA South region’s Laleham Golf Club Pro-Am on Sunday.

He finished three shots behind Staplehurst’s Scott Stevens, whose five-under par 65 secured him the first-prize cheque of £600.
