Triple European junior cross country champion Steph Twell raced to victory in the junior women’s race in Saturday’s South of England Cross Country Championships at Hillingdon House Farm, Uxbridge.

The St Mary’s Twickenham student won the 5km race in 21 minutes, five seconds, well clear of runner-up Hollie Rowland (22:31).

Hannah Edwards led Herne Hill to fifth team place in the U17s 5km event, finishing 26th (25:14), with Julia Wedmore 36th (25:53).

Madi Garner was 31st (25:40) and Kate Brown (25:59) 41st for sixth-placed St Mary’s Richmond.

Another St Mary’s student, Katharine Sparke, was an impressive winner of the senior women’s 8km race in 31:50, ahead of St Mary’s student Faye Fullerton (32:14).

Emily Adams, the 2008 Surrey champion, was fifth (32:45), with Clapham Chasers’ Justina Heslop, runner-up in the Surrey championship for the past two years, seventh (32:52).

Next was Belgrave’s Catherine Bryson (33:14), with Vicky Gill, who works in Teddington, 12th (34:01).

Karen Ellison led Herne Hill to sixth team place in 17th (34:29), with Harriet Owles 40th (36:20).

Epsom & Ewell’s Emily Alden was 24th (34:55).

Howard of Effingham schoolgirl Emelia Gorecka won the gils’ U15s 4km title in 14:32, beating training partner Ruth Hayes by five seconds.

St Mary’s Richmond’s Katie Iliffe was 32nd out of more than 200 runners (16:12).

Herne Hill’s Alex West was 36th in the girls’ U13s race over 3,000m (14:03), with St Mary’s ace Faye Holder 40th (14:07).
