Richmond Volleyball’s U16s girls’ team have advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Junior Championships after a dramatic second round of matches at Christ School and Boswell VC.

Richmond now travel to the University of Nottingham on March 7 for a last eight clash after coming out on top in the four-team second round competition, in which they defeated Team Southampton and Nuneaton, both 2-0, before going down 2-1 to Essex outfit Boswells.

Richmond coach Vera Kenyon said: “Some of the girls started volleyball only in September and progressed with confidence to an advanced system of play. The girls have displayed individual skills and ball control that they should be proud of but, most importantly, what we saw today was a team playing together.

“For the first time in the history of the junior development by Richmond Volleyball, our girls’ team reached the quarter-finals of this prestigious national competition. We are delighted with this result. It is very important that more and more girls are getting involved in the sport and Richmond Volleyball can offer them a clear path from the first introduction to the highest level competition in all age groups.“ Team: M.Ozaki (captain), K.Bryans, S.Nomura, A.Gonzalez, E.Yui, E.Rexhepi, C.Healey. V.Kenyon (coach).

Final Placings: (1st) Boswells (2nd) Richmond Volleyball, (3rd) Team Southampton, (4th) Nuneaton.
