Herne Hill Harriers’ Blade Ashby has followed big brother Thomas into the international arena with a resounding victory in the English Schools U15 multi-events championship.

He set a club record of 2,977 points, with a sparking display of 11.56 seconds for the 80m hurdles, 19.63m in the shot, 6.12m for the long jump, 1.81m in the high jump and 2:20.06 in the 800m.

Thomas was recently rewarded for two fine decathlon performances earlier this season, both of which were Harriers U20 records, with an England junior international vest in the Home Countries combined events international at Stoke-on-Trent.

Although below his superb best, Thomas achieved a creditable fourth place with a score of 6,042 points, almost 600 points shy of his record.

His downfall was the high jump, one of his best events on paper, but he did record several other fine marks as his weekend’s work – 15.14sec clocking over the hurdles, a 50.32m javelin throw, 34.82m for discus, a 6.30m long jump, 11.84m in the shot and 53.27 for 400m.

Harriers and Wandsworth Council have won a partnership award presented at the London Regional England Athletics Awards evening in Westminster.

Club secretary Steve Bosley received the award with Ann Marie Ormonde of Wandsworth Council in front of a distinguished audience from the athletics world.

The award recognised the link between club and the sports development team, as well as the recent development plans for Tooting Bec Track.
