Herne Hill Harriers’ women’s team lost their unbeaten season record to league leaders Southampton at the weekend and have now dropped to third in the rankings.

Last-minute injuries left Harriers lacking competitors in some events but they were very successful in others.

A and B string wins came in the pole vault, with Rosa Williams and Jenny Honeyball both easily clearing 3m, and in the shot, with Briony Phillips and Jade Dodd both over 12m.

Veteran Clare Pauzers volunteered for five events and recorded victories over 1,500m and 3,000m to add to points scores from 800m, high jump and the 4x400m relay.

In a 10k race in Battersea Park, Herne Hill experienced more success, with Brian Wilder second, Basil Wallace sixth and Simon Phillips clocking a new best by more than three minutes – or almost half a mile improvement!

In the European track championships in Slovenia, early reports are that Mike Boyle was fourth in the M45 age group over 10k, Martin McEvily sixth over 10k at M60 group and Sarah Allen eighth in her last few weeks as a W40 10k runner in her first run of these championships.

Herne Hill Harriers will have another competitor in Beijing, apart from Jade Johnson, as Magali Franks has been selected for the 100m an 200m in the colours of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
