Phillips Idowu demonstrated his Olympic Gold medal potentials with a comfortable victory in the men’s triple jump competition during last Friday’s Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace.

The 29-year-old Belgrave Harrier gave the South London punters a real taste of what to come in a couple of weeks time at the Chinese capital.

He shown excellent form throughout and produced a winning 17.42m effort in his final jump. Fellow Team GB Olympic reps Larry Achike and Nathan Douglas filled the remaining podium places with their 17.14m and 17.09m leaps, respectively.

“I had to wait until rounds four and five to get going but I’ve been saying all year that I feel, regardless of whatever anyone else does, I’m not going to lose,” said Idowu afterwards.

“I can't envisage myself being beaten. We had the top three finishers – that’s a nice way to finish before we go to Beijing.”

Also at the same meeting, Idowu’s clubmate Samson Omi finished a lowly joint ninth in the men’s high jump with a 2.20m effort. Russian Andrey Silnov won with a PB of 2.38m.
