Beijing gold medal hope Phillips Idowu will be aiming to break Jonathan Edwards' world triple jump record at the Aviva London Grand Prix meeting in Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Idowu, who was voted European athlete of the month for June, has made himself firm favourite for the Olympic title by heading the world rankings for the event this summer.

But the Belgrave Harriers athlete will need to jump out of his skin to beat the 18.29m set by Edwards 13 years ago.

Idowu, who topped the world rankings this year with 17.55m before the British Olympic trials in Birmingham, improved on this with 17.57 and 17.58m in winning the selection event.

"I am hoping for a massive jump at Crystal Palace, something serious," said Idowu.

"Keep your eyes open and if the conditions are right there will be something special.

"I can probably put another 80m to a metre on what I am doing. A distance of 18.40 is not beyond my capabilities if I nail one right and run through the way I can and complete my jump properly."

Most of Britain's Beijing team are in action at Crystal Palace this weekend.

Because of its popularity, the London Grand Prix has a second day this year, with some events on Saturday afternoon.

America's former world record-holder Asafa Powell has confirmed he is fit and ready for a 100m showdown with his great rival, Tyson Gay.

Despite pulling up during the 100m in the Golden League at Rome last week, Powell insists it was merely cramp and is in training in preparation for Friday's clash.

As well as Powell and Gay, current world record holder Usain Bolt, from Jamaica, lines up in the 200m and has promised spectators "something special" in the Saturday afternoon final.
