Old Mid-Whitgiftian lost by two wickets in an exciting last-over finish on Saturday against top-of-the-table Epsom, writes Robert Keenan.

Mids contributed fully to another classic contest, with Stewart Sales hitting his first league century for the club as their terrific recent form with the bat continued.

A stand of 122 for the fourth wicket between Sales and Hasan then put Mids in a strong position.

Sales dominated the strike, hitting 19 fours in a fine two-hour knock.

After he was finally caught on the boundary for 107, Bangladeshi left-hander Hasan reached 53 before being caught in the last over, as OMW closed on 243-6.

Facing a depleted OMW attack on a flat pitch, Epsom always had a chance and an opening stand of 122 between Ben Hudson (77) and Jon Batley put them well on course.

After Batley was caught and bowled by Hasan for 65, panic appeared to set in among the Epsom batsmen, who threatened to self-destruct.

Hasan picked up two more quick wickets to help reduce them to 187-7, at which point Mids suddenly looked favourites to win the game.

Ali Murrell put on 47 crucial runs with number nine Will Baker (24) to swing the balance of power back in Epsom's favour. With seven runs needed from the last over, Murrell hit the winning run off the fourth ball to finish unbeaten on 39.
