Former world junior half-marathon champion Kassa Tadesse won Elmbridge Road Runners' Julie Button Memorial 10K Road Race in warm conditions on Sunday.

But Tadesse, who set the course record of 30 minutes, 33 seconds four years ago, was pushed all the way by fit-again Ranelagh Harriers runner Sam Perkins.

In a sprint finish, former Belgrave Harriers runner Tadesse got to the line just two seconds ahead in 32:19.

Nick Hodges, of Dorking & Mole Valley, was third out of 600 runners (32:30).

Jimmy Goulis led Stragglers to the men's team prize in fourth (32:59), two seconds ahead of Tim Elsey, with Tim Doran first from the organising club in 33:35, while Duncan Lancashire, of Striders of Croydon, was seventh (33:40).

Ranelagh's Paul Doyle was first veteran over-40 (34:23), ahead of Elmbridge resident Roy Reeder, of Stragglers (34:43), and Luis Fernando Gomez, of Sutton Runners (34:50).

The first veteran over-50 was South London Harriers' Ian Kitching (35:51).

Hercules Wimbledon's former marathon international Steve Badgery set the fastest 10km time by a UK over-60 veteran this year in winning his section (36:34).

Clapham Chasers' Justina Heslop controlled the women's race from the start to win by more than a minute (36:26). Unattached runner Claire Thorn (38:02) was second, with Chasers' Mona Burt (38:40) helping them to the women's team prize.

Juliet Cleghorn was first woman veteran (39:24), with her Stragglers' clubmate Phyllis Flynn top over-45 finisher (40:08). Best over 55 runner was Epsom Oddballs' Liz Neville (46:11).

The race was sponsored by Air Products and a donation will go to carers' charity Elmbridge Crossroads.
