Surrey just missed out on a place in the National County Top Two Four finals, writes Mike Haigh.

They were pipped by Isle of Wight in Sunday's regional final at Winchmore Hill, Berkshire.

Having already beaten a good Oxfordshire team in an earlier round, Surrey beat Berkshire 47-36 in Sunday morning's semi-final.

Ian Jenkins' rink, with Mark Bishop in masterful form, won by 13 shots, while Ian Honnor's quartet were pipped by just two points against England regular Robert Newman.

Rink 1: Berks 21 Surrey: Doug Spittles, Norman Ross, Dennis Hennessy, Ian Honnor 19. 2: Berks 15 Andy Gladwell, Jeff O'Leary, Chris Young, Ian Jenkins 28.

In the afternoon, Jenkins' rink again earned a five-shot win, but Surrey were denied a national semi-final appearance at Worthing in August on the final bowl - Isle of Wight winning 41-40.

Rink 3: IOW 23 Surrey: Doug Spittles, Norman Ross, Dennis Hennessy, Ian Honnor 17. 4: IOW 18 Andy Gladwell, Jeff O'Leary, Chris Young, Ian Jenkins 23.

Surrey suffered a five-shot defeat by the Royal County of Berkshire at Three Mile Cross BC in Saturday's Senior Home Counties League match.

Although no more than single figures separated the two sides throughout the match, and both won three rinks, Berkshire claimed 16 points to Surrey's six.

Powerful performances by Berkshire's England player Robert Newman on rink three and by Ian Snowdon on rink five tipped the scales in favour of the hosts, who finished up 118-113 winners.

But there were equally good performances on the Surrey rinks skipped by Lee Dickson (South London), Graham Vigor (Croydon) and Gareth McDonagh (Cheam).

Surrey can expect better things in their remaining league fixtures at home to Kent and Buckinghamshire.

Rink 1: Berks 16 Surrey: Gary Wilkinson, Andrew Barclay, Joe Cable, Lee Dickson 24. 2: Berks 19 Mark Porter, Paul Foley, Graham Spencer, Ian Ross 15. 3: Berks 30 Mick Blake, Keith Webbon, Peter Hunt, Dave Clark 19. 4: Berks 10 Charles Bruder, Nick Carroll, Paul Chuter, Graham Vigor 26. 5: Berks 28 Gary Stevens, Daniel Morris, Mike McDonagh, Andy Dawkins 13. 6: Berks 15 Phil Burge, David Candeland, Simon Clark, Gareth McDonagh 16.

Surrey suffered one of their biggest defeats in recent times when they crashed 145-94 against Berkshire in windy conditions at Wokingham.

Berkshire won on five of the six rinks. Frank Fairbairn (Malden) and John Hawley (Merton Manor), received their county badges at this match.
