Martyn Rooney, already ranked European number one over 400m this season, enjoyed an emphatic win in the Spar European Cup in Annency last Saturday.

The 21-year-old, fresh from a sensational anchor leg that brought Britain from fifth to second in the 4x400m, looked comfortable throughout his individual event.

The Croydon Harriers runner produced a timely surge in the final stages to take victory in 45.33 seconds.

"My main aim was to win. I always made sure I had a bit in the tank and in the end I came through and won it," said Rooney.

With overall victory certain for the British men's team, Rooney set off purposefully on his anchor leg in fifth place in the 4x400m and his fantastic 44.2 run brought the team home second.

The Croydon man was just behind the leading Frenchman, whose team clocked 3:02.33, ahead of the British team's 3:02.66.
